What you can expect from the role:
As a senior member of the Private Client Department within a growing independent firm, you will play a pivotal part in managing annual compliance work and advisory projects for a personal portfolio of clients, primarily HNWIs, including sole traders and partnerships. You will work directly with Partners on planning matters, supervise staff, and handle both UK and non-resident tax issues, particularly for individuals moving to and from the UK. You will manage clients who are beneficiaries of UK and non-UK trusts, and ensure timely, budget-compliant delivery of work.
In addition, you will regularly liaise with clients, oversee tax return preparation, and correspond with HMRC. You will contribute to business development, internal meetings, and manage billing, time budgets, and staff training.
The important work you will be doing include, but not limited to:
- Manage income tax (including National Insurance) and capital gains tax, and review PAYE coding notices when needed.
- Review and approve Self-Assessment tax returns prepared by staff and file them electronically.
- Communicate with clients on routine and ad-hoc tasks, including inheritance tax, income tax, and capital gains tax, via email, phone, or meetings.
- Assist partners with advisory work, including preparing reports on IHT planning, residence, UK trusts, and business structure.
- Prepare for and attend client meetings (existing and potential), set budgets, and ensure timely, budget-compliant work completion.
- Correspond with HMRC regarding s9A enquiries and digital disclosure facility cases.
- Oversee the collection of information needed for tax returns, liaising with clients and third parties.
- Handle routine client correspondence and ensure all tasks meet HMRC deadlines.
- Bill clients quarterly, monitor reserves, and update partners on billing issues.
- Track personal time budgets and chargeability.
- Attend and contribute to internal departmental meetings.
- Network at events for business development.
The skills and experience you will bring:
Ideally, you will be ATT and/or CTA qualified, but the firm would also welcome applications from those qualified by experience.
Experience within a similar role and dealing with complex tax matters.
