Senior / Staff Embedded Firmware Engineer – Storage Systems
Overview
We are seeking a Senior / Staff‑level Embedded Firmware Engineer to support advanced storage system development, with a strong focus on Hard Disk Drive (HDD) technologies. This role is hands‑on, technically deep, and ideal for an engineer who can step in quickly, operate independently, and contribute immediately in a performance‑critical environment.
You will work on complex, real‑time embedded systems, developing high‑performance algorithms and diagnosing low‑level hardware and firmware issues in collaboration with cross‑functional engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, and optimize embedded firmware for HDD‑based storage systems
Implement and enhance storage caching architectures and algorithms for real‑time, high‑performance applications
Write and maintain production‑grade C and C++ code in constrained, performance‑sensitive environments
Perform advanced statistical analysis and root‑cause investigations using software and hardware diagnostic tools
Identify system failures, performance bottlenecks, and reliability issues, and implement robust, scalable solutions
Collaborate closely with engineering peers through Teams‑based, highly interactive communication
Operate with a high level of autonomy, requiring minimal ramp‑up or oversight
Required Qualifications
Senior or Staff‑level engineering experience
Direct Hard Disk Drive (HDD) experience (required)
Strong background in embedded and firmware engineering
Expert‑level proficiency in C and C++
Deep understanding of storage caching architectures and algorithmic design
Proven experience developing efficient, high‑performance algorithms for real‑time systems
Extensive experience with statistical analysis, failure analysis, and debugging across software and hardware layers
Ability to step into complex systems quickly and deliver value with minimal onboarding
Strong written and verbal communication skills; comfortable working in collaborative, Teams‑heavy environments
Very Nice to Have
Experience serving as a technical lead or “right‑hand” engineer to leadership
Background in hardware‑focused R&D environments, similar to large storage or semiconductor organizations (e.g., Toshiba‑like environments)
Nice to Have
Experience working with global engineering teams, including coordination across Japan time zones
Why This Role
Technically challenging, deep engineering work in high‑performance storage systems
Opportunity to influence designs, algorithms, and system reliability at a senior level
Autonomous role with trust, ownership, and visibility
Collaborative engineering culture with strong technical standards
Pay Details: $140,000.00 to $190,000.00 per year
Search managed by: Jeff Schweiger
Equal Opportunity Employer/Veterans/Disabled
Military connected talent encouraged to apply
